CLS-Compatible Laser Printers (older printers)

To print all CLS reports, including Payroll tax forms, a CLS-compatible laser printer is required.

Most CLS reports, with the exception of payroll tax forms, can be printed on any Windows printer if a third-party print-capture utility (Printfil) has been installed on the workstation. Printfil is available from FMSI.

For a laser printer to be completely compatible with CLS, it must:

• Be a stand-alone printer (it must not be host-based).
• Support a version of HP’s Printer Control Language (usually PCL 4, PCL 5e or PCL 6).
• Be able to accept downloaded soft tax fonts.
• Be connected to the computer using a parallel or USB port, or be set up as a network printer.
• For CLS to work with a USB-port or network printer, the Windows^® Net Use command must be used to assign a virtual parallel port. In Vista, where the Net Use command doesn't work, Printfil will be required.
• Support MS-DOS based software running under Windows^® 98, ME, NT, XP (32-bit), Vista (32-bit), 2000, or 2003.
